Jobs for everyone!
It really sucks! You know you have to get a job, or you won’t be able to afford your own place or have any money to play on the weekends. It sucks.
Some of your friends have jobs, but flipping burgers at McDonalds or changing oil at the Jiffy Lube is not your idea of a life plan. Your job needs to pay well, but your time off to play is important too. Where do you find a job like that? What about a job that actually pays you on holidays and vacations? What about a job that is actually interesting and fun?
Sure, ten years of college and a gazillion dollars later, and you can have one of those jobs, too, right?
Not necessarily. City and county public works departments have jobs that require anything from a high school diploma to a masters degree. We have jobs using computers in an office, or working with your hands and operating heavy equipment outdoors. Like working in a laboratory? No problem. Like fixing cars? No problem. Like good pay, time off, fun work, health insurance, and even paid vacations? No problem.
As a bonus, you will be one of the heroes in your community. Public Works people are the ones who put the city back in order after floods, fires, windstorms and other natural disasters. Of course, that sometimes means working in snow, rain and wind, often in the middle of the night. So it’s not easy, but it’s as important as the Fire Department and Police Department. Think about it. If all this sounds good to you, stay in school, do your math and science, and check out the variety of jobs that make up the Public Works team in your city or county.
